'It's not a bit life like ,' said Alicia Coombe , staring at the doll. 'And ye t, in a funny way, she doe s se e m alive , doe sn't she ?'
'Oo, it did give me a turn,' said Mrs Grove s, as she we nt round the showroom, dusting. 'Such a turn as I hardly like to go into the fitting- room any more .' 'What's give n you a turn?' de mande d Miss Coombe who was sitting at a writing-table in the corne r, busy with various accounts. 'This woman,' she adde d more for he r own be ne fit than that of Mrs Grove s, 'thinks she can have two e ve ning dre sse s, thre e cocktail dre sse s, and a suit e ve ry ye ar without e ve r paying me a pe nny for the m! Re ally, some pe ople !' 'It's that doll,' said Mrs Grove s.
'What, our doll again?'
'Ye s, sitting up the re at the de sk, like a human. Oo, it didn't half give me a turn!' 'What are you talking about?'
Alicia Coombe got up, strode across the room, across the landing outside , and into the room opposite - the fitting-room. The re was a small She raton de sk in one corne r of it, and the re , sitting in a chair drawn up to it, he r long floppy arms on the de sk, sat the doll. 'Some body se e ms to have be e n having fun,' said Alicia Coombe . 'Fancy sitting he r up like that. Re ally, she looks quite natural.' Sybil Fox came down the stairs at this mome nt, carrying a dre ss that was to be trie d on that morning.
'Come he re , Sybil. Look at our doll sitting at my private de sk and writing le tte rs now.' The two wome n looke d.
'Re ally,' said Alicia Coombe , 'it's too ridiculous! I wonde r who proppe d he r up the re . Did you?' 'No, I didn't,' said Sybil. 'It must have be e n one of the girls from upstairs.' 'A silly sort of joke , re ally,' said Alicia Coombe . She picke d up the doll from the de sk and thre w he r back on the sofa.
Sybil laid the dre ss ove r a chair care fully, the n she we nt out and up the stairs to the workroom. 'You know the doll,' she said, 'the ve lve t doll in Miss Coombe 's room downstairs - in the fitting room?'
The fore woman and thre e girls looke d up.
'Ye s, miss, of course we know.'
'Who sat he r up at the de sk this morning for a joke ?' The thre e girls looke d at he r, the n Elspe th, the fore woman, said, 'Sat he r up at the de sk? I didn't.'
'Nor did I,' said one of the girls.
